Download Stellarium Zip

The following assumes that you are familiar with Stellarium and an image processing program. If you're an Orange County Astronomers member who is observing from from our Anza site, you can just download the files.

Download stellarium zip

Stellarium provides a way to add the custom landscape from a .zip file for your user account. As described below, two files - a graphic scene file (.png) and a text (.ini) information file must be in a folder in your user directory. Stellarium can handle installing these files once the .zip file has been created (or downloaded).

Creating the panoramic photo is fairly simple with a smart phone. On a Google phone (I used a Pixel 3a XL), either the "panorama" or "photo sphere" mode can be used. On my phone, the photo program simply directs me to move the camera around in a circle until I've covered the required 360 span. After a few seconds, the photo is stitched together and available to be downloaded to a computer (as a .jpg file).

Once downloaded, the file should be opened in Photoshop or equivalent image processing file, then saved as a .png file. Before closing the file, change the file's canvas to match a 2:1 aspect ratio, adjust the position of the horizon vertically so that it is in the middle of the canvas. The next step is to erase the sky (create a transparent area) above the horizon so that Stellarium's stars will show through the landscape view. And finally, resize the image to a moderate size such as 2000x1000 pixels and save it as the final .png file.

To try out the the image yourself, first download the landscape zip file. Then, in Stellarium, open up the View dialog (F4), select the Landscape tab, click on the Add/remove landscapes button, and then click on the Install a new landscape from a Zip archive button. Select the file you downloaded, and the Sterling Hall view should appear!

I haven't had good luck with Stellarium controlling my telescope either. If I use it to slew the scope it has a tendancy to point it straight down. I run the scope with a logitech wireless controller and use stellarium as a guide as to where the scope is. What I haven't had good luck with is trying to set up a hub so I can run Stellarium and PHD simultaneously.

Backstory: bought a new Celestron AVX from a popular retailer. I unpack everything. No CD ROM for the mount is included. Fine. I assume that the software is in the Handcontroller, and once I hook up my Windows 10 laptop I will be able to download the Nexremote software.

As you can see you must have Nexremote software installed. I wrongly assumed there would be an easy-to-find download at the Celestron website. Oh, I am naïve! Nope. But a quick message to Uncle Rod (I actually think there are several Uncle Rods... he is so helpful and on many different internet sites that I don't believe it is just one guy ) provided me with this direction:

Now I says to myself "Self, you are done!" Nope. The download was successful but the Run part was not. After receiving an error message I did another Google search and found that I needed to "trick" the software into thinking my computer was Windows 7. Here's the solution: after downloading right click on the .exe file and select "Troubleshooting..." It may run through a quick diagnosis and come up with nothing. That's when I did a second troubleshooting and selected Custom> Windows 7.

There was a change in the star catalogs, and I had such a "zoom to 5 crash" during development. Extra stars should be in C:/Users/YOU/AppData/Roaming/Stellarium/stars/default. Simply rename default and try again please. If this helps, delete the renamed folder and re-download the updated catalogs. (A new folder "default" will be created on launch.)

Open this file in Wordpad or anyeditor and keep the first30.000 asteroids or so and remove the rest.Open the MPCORB.DAT file in the internal HNSKY asteroid editor. HNSKYwill then convert format.
