Can I Buy Diapers With Fsa BEST

The average parent spends about $1,000 a year on diapers, and unfortunately they can't use an FSA to pay for them. Regular diapers for newborns and infants are not FSA eligible. However, diapers used to relieve the effects of a specific disease or medical condition may qualify with a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) from a pediatrician or other medical practitioner.

Even though infant diapers are not FSA eligible, toddler training pants and nighttime underwear are used to protect against incontinence. If you have a toddler who is potty training, these pants are a great middle ground between diapers and underwear. They can wear these both at night and during the day. The Goodnites brand includes comic book characters and Disney princesses that your child will love.

Items that are eligible for reimbursement under a consumer-directed healthcare account must be primrily for the diagnosis, mitigatio, or treatment of a specific medical condition or affect a structure of function of the body. The IRS views infant diapers as products that are necessary for "general health" purposes, as incontinence is a normal and healthy function of the body for an infant and therefore ineligible for reimbursement.

As mentioned above, there are some cases where diapers, be they for use by babies, children or adults, can be eligible for reimbursement. Diapers for older children and adults are eligible for reimbursement because they are used to treat the symptoms of an underlying medical condition - generally incontinence. In these cases, it's best to check with a benefits administrator to explain the full scope of the issue and seek guidance about possible next steps.

If the medical issue has symptoms that require diapers to treat the condition, these items may be eligible for reimbursement with a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) from a medical professional. These letters must contain a specific diagnosis and details about how the treatment will be used to alleviate the condition. Lastly, LMN must outline how long this treatment will last and another LMN must be submitted if the treatment exceeds the current plan year.

Or, you can skip the legwork and buy items directly from the official FSA Store or HSA Store, and rest easy knowing everything you buy is approved.

Of course, pregnancy is not always automatic. If people look for fertility assistance in their process, they can also turn to HSA and FSA to help. They can start with fertility tests and move all the way through in vitro fertilization (IVF), plus egg and embryo storage fees, if this allowed by the plan administrator. From prevention, to planning, to pregnancy, look to your HSA and FSA.

While regular expenses like paying for hospital birth costs are eligible for HSA and FSA funds, parents might also want to look at plan options for cord blood storage, massage therapy, and chiropractic care*. In addition, supportive wraps and undergarments post-delivery may help with comfort and recovery.

It's also important to keep a record of the expenses you pay with your HSA, HRA, or FSA in case Cigna asks you to prove that an expense was eligible for reimbursement from your account, or in case you are audited by the IRS. Examples of records you should keep include: receipts, Explanation of Benefits (EOB), medical diagnosis/physician diagnosis letters, and prescriptions.

You can use your Dependent Care FSA (DCFSA) to pay for a wide variety of child and adult care services. The IRS determines which expenses can be reimbursed by an FSA. While this list shows the eligibility of some of the most common dependent care expenses, it's not meant to be comprehensive. Be sure to check with your tax advisor if you have questions about whether a certain expense is eligible for reimbursement under this program.

When submitting a DCFSA claim, either have your dependent care provider certify the service by signing the claim form or provide an itemized statement from the dependent care provider that includes service dates, dependent's name, type of service, amount billed, and the provider's name and address along with a completed claim form. Credit card receipts, canceled checks, and balance forward statements do not meet the requirements for acceptable documentation.
